Gateway to Engineering is an introductory course designed to give students experience with engineering at the design and prototype level. Students will acquire knowledge and skills in problem solving, teamwork and innovation. Students explore STEM careers as they participate in a project-based learning process, designed to challenge and engage the natural curiosity and imagination of middle school students. Teams design and test their ideas using modeling, automation, robotics, mechanical and computer control systems, while exploring energy and the environment. Students also work in groups to design and build prototypes that fulfill a need, modifying projects throughout the nine weeks. Students learn to use basic geometry and 3D design programs while constructing prototypes. This course will give students an understanding of the basic engineering concepts they will continue to explore in engineering courses at the high schools and SWCA.
