Design and Modeling is an introductory course designed to give students experience with project-based learning and the design process while working towards being innovative. Students will acquire knowledge and skills in problem-solving, teamwork, and innovation. Students explore STEM careers as they participate in a project-based learning process, designed to challenge and engage the natural curiosity and imagination of middle school students. Teams design and test their ideas using modeling, automation, robotics, and mechanical and computer control systems, while exploring energy and the environment.
Students are challenged and empowered to use and apply what they’ve learned throughout the unit to design a therapeutic toy for a child who has cerebral palsy. Students learn to use basic geometry and 3D design programs while constructing prototypes. This course will give students an understanding of the basic engineering concepts they will continue to explore in engineering courses at the high schools and SWCA.
