Program Overview

Health Technologies: Pre-Nursing is a two-year program designed to prepare students for entry into a career in nursing and other nursing-focused or healthcare-related careers. The curriculum includes Medical Terminology, Patient-Centered Care, Basic Nursing Skills, Mental Health, Nursing Pharmacology and Medical Math, Human Pathophysiology, and Diagnostics and Medical Intervention. Through articulation and College Credit Plus (CCP), students can earn postsecondary credit.

Junior students will be introduced to a broad overview of health sciences and career pathways as a result of a pre-nursing focus. Students will be trained in medical terminology, infection control, patient safety and interventions, fundamentals of basic nursing, personal care skills, the mental health of patients, and therapeutic communication with patients and families. During their junior year, students will have the opportunity to become a Certified Nursing Aide through a state-regulated exam where upon successful completion they will have earned their State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA) certification. In addition, students will become AHA BLS and First Aid certified.

Senior students will further strengthen their nursing knowledge by focusing on critical thinking, patient assessment, diagnostic and laboratory testing, as well as diagnosis and treatment options, plans of care, and care implementation . Students will be given the opportunity to work with nurses and other nurse aides in the community to observe patient assessments and documentation, medication administration, wound care and treatments, and care team interaction. Senior students will also become certified in OSHA: healthcare.

It's All About the Experiences

Pre-Nursing seniors recently experienced a wide array of hands-on activities at the Mount Carmel Clinical Skills and Simulation Center.  With a staff of 7 health care experts, students divided into small groups and practiced their skills on medical simulator manikins during mock codes, performed maternal assessments, watched a birth, learned how to perform infant assessments, practiced ultrasound basics, & learned about heart tones and lung sounds.  It was an amazing, hands-on experience for the students.
