Project Search

Johnathan Howard,
Current Project SEARCH Intern
Johnathan graduated from Franklin Heights High School. Johnathan explains that he chose to apply for the Project SEARCH program in order to, "gain skills that will help him get and keep a job for the future." Johnathan is currently participating in an internship rotation in the Sterile Processing Department at Doctors Hospital where he is responsible for a variety of tasks including: prepping surgical equipment to be sterilized, collecting used surgical carts from operating rooms and delivering surgical equipment to operating rooms as necessary. The supervisor of SPD has reported that she has worked with Project SEARCH programs at other hospitals and by far Johnathan stands out as the best PS intern she has ever worked with. She is impressed with his work ethic, his initiative, and his ability to communicate with the associates he works with each day.
Johnathan will begin his second internship rotation in mid-December. He will be working in the Food and Nutrition Department helping with food prep.

Program Overview
Project SEARCH serves students with significant intellectual and developmental disabilities. Typically, these are students who are on an Individual Education Program (IEP) and in their last year of high school eligibility. The most important criterion for acceptance into Project SEARCH is a desire to achieve competitive employment. The program provides real-life work experience combined with training in employability and independent living skills to help youths with significant disabilities make successful transitions from school to productive adult life.
Students attend the program for a full school year at Ohio Health Doctors Hospital. The hospital provides access to an on-site classroom that can accommodate up to twelve students. The site is staffed by a special education teacher and one to three job coaches to meet the educational and training needs of the students.
Through a series of three targeted internships the students acquire competitive, marketable and transferable skills to enable them to apply for a related position. These internship rotations begin a few weeks after the start of the program. Students spend approximately five hours each day at the internships including a thirty minute lunch. Working from a task list, they acquire the core skills necessary to be hired in an entry-level position at Doctors Hospital or elsewhere in the community.

Alumni Student

Colton Showalter,
Project SEARCH Alumni
Colton completed the Project SEARCH program in May of 2016. During his time at Project SEARCH, he made quite an impression on associates and administrators at Doctors Hospital. Shortly after graduation, Colton was offered a position in Food and Nutrition Department at Doctors Hospital. He works three days a week helping with stocking and general cleaning in the cafe. Colton recently received a STARS award at the hospital for showing initiative and giving a helping hand to help with a project the administrative office was completing in the cafeteria. Colton says that he loves coming to work and is saving his money to go to the Rose Bowl parade in January with his brother and the GCHS band.
