Software Development
at the Accelerated Learning Center
Program Overview
The SWCSD has partnered with Columbus State Community College (CSCC) in the development of 3 distinct dual credit programs. Three CCP programs will be offered (priority enrollment for 11th and 12th graders): Software Development; General Liberal Arts; Health Sciences. Through the Accelerated Learning Center, students will take college courses, gain an in-depth understanding of what is needed to be successful in a college environment, and get a head start on earning college credits. The ALC Programs have a seat capacity of 25-30 students per cohort; therefore, students must apply for admission. Not all students will be accepted and/or may be placed on a waitlist. The Software Development Course is designed for the student interested in technology.
Requirements:

The ALC-Software Development program is a 2-year program that focuses on front-end development. Students create live websites, learn about hardware, and create desktop/mobile applications. Students are enrolled in 9 courses, which allows them to earn up to 27 college credit hours through Columbus State Community College. This program helps students to become more college and career-ready upon graduation.
Highlights of the program include participation in the CBUS Hackathon, Cyber Range cybersecurity events, job shadowings, work-based learning opportunities, and various CCP offerings. Students are still able to participate in their high school courses, as well as earn additional college credits outside of Software Development. We have had several students graduate with as many as 55 college credits from participation in multiple programs. Many students have transferred these credits to Columbus State Community College, OSU, Ohio University, Cincinnati, Capital University, and many other Ohio colleges. Some students reported they were on track to graduate college early. One particular student stated that she is double majoring in Math and Computer Science and will graduate early because of the credit offerings from the program.
Many students in the program have participated in job shadowing and completed internships after graduating from the program before entering college. We are currently piloting an internship program within our district through Ohio Development Services. The goal is to connect our IT students to Central Ohio businesses. We have had field trips to various companies over the last few years, such as Nationwide, CoverMyMeds, Pillar Technologies, etc. While on field trips, students have participated in actual meetings, had lightning talks covering current languages, modern UI's, had technical interviews, and witnessed the work of being a developer. We have also received insight into what technical managers look for in hiring young developers. CAS (A division of the American Chemical Society) has recently provided a real-world problem for the students to solve involving Agile Project Management.
