Through the Middle School Intro to Coding and App Development program (each 9-week electives), students learn to code using Apple devices and the Swift Playgrounds App. These opportunities are provided through a partnership with Ohio State University and Apple.
Through Intro to Coding, students begin learning to code using Apple's Swift Playgrounds! This course is a nine-week-long introduction to coding covering the basics of the Swift programming language utilizing Apple's Learn to Code 1 and Learn to Code 2 and is a great building block to the App Dev course. Students also learn to code robotics using the Sphero robotic ball and the MeeBot.
Throughout the App Development course, students tackle real-life issues by working to develop an app prototype using Keynote that would address a problem facing the school or community. This course walks through Apple's Learn to Code Puzzles and culminates into a final App showcase where students can show off their App prototypes!
These skills and analytical thinking will help prepare students for a career path in IT. Students who are hooked on programming can then enroll in classes at the high school level which includes, Intro to Tech and Network Security, Programming I, Programming 2.0, Software Development, or the South-Western Career Academy's Mobile App Development program (a two-year program).
